On Monday evening, I received an e-mail message from Rebecca:

I thought you might like to know that you now officially have a “little people” named after you. [The “little people”] is a little black girl with braids but she has a camera around her neck so Juliet said “Looks just like Bob!”

I didn’t quite see the resemblance, but Juliet said she’s Bob so that’s the way it goes!

I’m still smiling.

I did have a camera around my neck. And I was wearing all black. But the thing that makes me smile the most is that 2 1/2 year olds are so pure. Gender doesn’t matter, race doesn’t matter, age doesn’t matter….

Ray Romano

On Friday, May 14th, Ray Romano headlined an evening, A Ray of Hope, to benefit the early detection, treatment and cure of ovarian cancer. Every year,  approximately 22,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the United States and about 15,000 American women die from the disease.

The goal of A Ray of Hope, was to to raise much-needed research funding for this under-detected, yet highly treatable disease. One hundred percent of the evening’s proceeds will go toward Mt. Sinai Hospital and NYU Medical Center, to help fund their efforts to develop an early detection test, improve health care and treatment practices, and ultimately and ideally discover a cure for ovarian cancer.
Other performers during the evening included Craig Schulman, star of Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables; Ofreh, Tony-Award nominated actress for Legally Blonde; Jon Manfrellotti, co-star of Men of a Certain Age.

The event was hosted by Valerie Smaldone, a 5-time Billboard Magazine Award winner and is well known for her unprecedented success holding the #1 on air position in the New York radio market. Also joining her during the evening was Linda John and Dr. Frank Arena of the SASS Foundation.

The Sass Foundation for Medical Research, Inc. was established in 1986 as a non-profit, non-sectarian foundation dedicated to medical research, education and patient care programs for cancer and related diseases: www.sassfoundation.org.

Randy Jones & B.D. Wong

On April 28, Marriage Equliaty New York (http://www.meny.us/) held their 12th Annual gala at Slate Restaurant in New York City.

The MENY Gala recognized and honored: Queer Rising, NYS Senator Peralta, Shannon Minter, and B.D. Wong for their work in moving marriage equality forward in New York State and, in some cases, on the national front. This recognition comes from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and it represents how important this issue is in our everyday lives.

In addition to the honorees, many notables came out to support the event including Marti Gould Cummings, Yetta Kurland, Lea DeLaria, Randy Jones, Marty Thomas, NY2 news anchor Margo Rose Ferderer, NYC Comptroller John Liu, Jesse Archer, former Detroit Tiger pitcher Matt Pender, Tina McKissick, Dan Gershaw, Reichen Lehmkuhl and more.

On Saturday, April 24, 2010 at 8 PM at The St. George Theater  on Staten Island, The Harbor Lights Theater Company presented Stephen Schwartz—Making Music, which chronicled the career journey of an artist whose early success and later disappointment ultimately ends in triumph.

Directed and choreographed by Chet Walker (Co-creator of the Tony Award-winning Broadway show Fosse and Founder of WALKERDANCE), this dramatic story features some of Schwartz’s most memorable music from shows including Godspell, Pippin, The Baker’s Wife, Children of Eden, and Wicked. HLTC’s founding artistic director is Tamara Jenkins (pictured) and their founding associate artistic director is Jay Montgomery (also pictured).

Harbor Lights’ home will be the Snug Harbor Greek Revival Musical Hall, which originally opened in 1892 and is currently undergoing restoration (pictured). As an fyi, Snug Harbor was created in 1801 as a “haven for aged, decrepit and worn out sailors.”
