Squeeze at Radio City Music Hall

On Thursday, July 13, Squeeze returned to Radio City Music Hall. There’s not much else to say, really except that they sound just as good — if not better — then they did when I first heard one of their recordings.

Performing were Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook, John Bentley (bass) and The Fluffers’ Simon Hanson (drums) and Stephen Large (keyboards).

The best Christmas concert ever!

Sierra Boggess

Raul Esparza (Speed-the-Plow), Sherie Rene Scott (Dirty Rotten Scoundrel), Tyler Maynard (Altar Boyz, Mary Poppins), Sierra Boggess (The Little Mermaid) and more Broadway stars joined forces for the second holiday concert to benefit Artists Striving to End Poverty.

Although the concert is titled “New York City Christmas,” it should be titled “The Best Christmas Concert Ever!” Lynne Shankel and all of the artists involved are absolutely amazing! If you missed the concert, you can purchase the CD via ASTEP’s website and iTunes.

Other artists performing were Randy Aaron, Katy Basile, Nick Blaemire, Derrick Cobey, Chester Gregrory II, Miles Johnson, Andy Karl, Lindsay Mendez, Orfeh, Cristen Paige, Tory Ross, Anya Singleton, Sally Wilfert, Betsy Wolfe, Lynne Shankel, Joe Mowatt, Randy Landau, Peter Calo, Michael Aarons, Cliff Lyons, Roger Rosenberg, Scott Keitzer, Kenny Rampton, Maxim Mosten and Summer Boggess. The evening was hosted by the wonderfully witty Harriet Harris and directed by Stafford Arima.

The concert also was a celebration of the release of the NEW YORK CITY CHRISTMAS benefit recording on Sh-K-Boom Records and, also, the 10th anniversary of Sh-K-Boom.

ASTEP uses the arts as a tool to empower young people with creativity, knowledge, and a strong sense of self-esteem, factors which help them advance their lives and communities. ASTEP provides artists with opportunities to connect with global youths, allowing them to use their gifts to create meaningful and effective change for young people in need.

NYC Christmas returns — as do last year’s images!

Last year, I volunteered to photograph A New York City Christmas, a Christmas concert to benefit Artists Striving to End Poverty.

I learned today that some of my photos from last year’s concert are in the cd booklet of new release from Sh-K-Boom records.

The concert was, without a doubt, the best Christmas concert I’ve ever experienced. And the creative forces (including the extraordinarily talented musical director Lynne Shankel) behind last year’s concert are bringing it back again this year on Monday, December 13. All the details about the 2009 New York City Christmas concert are here.

I don’t usually repost images but, if you are curious and don’t feel like searching my blog, you can view the photos from the 2008 New York City Christmas concert here.

The B-52s in Concert

Fred Schneider

Fred Schneider

The B-52s took to the stage on Governor’s Island in New York at approximately 9 pm on Tuesday, August 18. Less than an hour later, a storm came thundering in — right in the middle of “Roam.” Thunder crashed and the heavens opened. I wound up waiting out the down pour in a porta-potty (it was actually large and air conditioned so it wasn’t that horrible). Sadly, the concert ended much too soon!

Defying Inequality: The Broadway Concert

Cast members of SESAME STREET

Cast members of SESAME STREET

On Monday, February 23, a gaggle of stars came out to perform at the Gershwin Theater in “Defying Inequality: The Broadway Concert,” a benefit concert for the following organizations: Family Equality Council, Empire State Pride Agenda, Equality California, Garden State Equality, and The Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force. For more information, visit DefyingInequality.Com.

Personally, I was thrilled that cast members of SESAME STREET took part in the event. I remember watching the premiere episode of the television program—over and over again. If there ever was a show that embraced diversity, SESAME STREET is the one. It was a groundbreaking show in 1969 and it is still breaking ground today! Maybe they’ll help save a few kids from getting beaten up (or worse).

Cyndi Lauper offered a nice piece of wisdom:

The truth is: if one person doesn’t have any rights, nobody does.

One of the highlights of my evening, however, was listening to Sally Struthers tell Fox News about how she married her dog (“He’s my best friend.”). And she said (although I may be paraphrasing, I didn’t write it down), “If I can marry my dog, why can’t a man marry a man?” Gotta love her! 🙂
